The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.
