Nearly twenty-five thousand households in southeastern Queensland found themselves lacking electricity on Monday morning after intense storm systems impacted the region, bringing wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Ice Stones and Extensive Damage

Residents reported substantial frozen pellets reaching sizes of 7 centimeters in particular locations. The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that various areas across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Response teams were focused on reestablishing energy supply throughout the affected regions, with dozens of response units deployed to manage the widespread outages.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

At the same time, approximately one thousand residents in the southern state also experienced power outages after Melbourne recorded its most precipitation in 18 months.

State Emergency Services handled over five hundred requests for assistance across the state, primarily for structural issues but also for downed trees and inundation.

• Werribee region - saw substantial destruction
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple emergency calls
• Wyndham - over 175 calls for assistance

At one point on Sunday, more than 28k power users in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Humid circumstances were forecast to persist along much of eastern Queensland this next several days as a weather pattern continued to draw in moisture against the coastal areas.

Tomorrow was forecast to be the wettest day, with continued thunderstorm potential expected across multiple regions of both states.

Safety Concern

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the state's northern country region, particularly given the ongoing climate situation.

This caution comes after previous incidents where similar conditions led to major medical consequences in the state.
