Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
