Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also featured experts in various fields.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
