Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.

Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Police then located many other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Police say preliminary tests show the substance was likely human blood.

"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for information.

A high-ranking political figure said the attack made him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
